The MatterTM development platform helps simplify the development process for interoperable IoT devices, allowing developers to focus on innovation and user experience.
• NXP's portfolio of processing, security and connectivity solutions enables full adoption of the new Matter standard.
NXP Semiconductors N.V. (Nasdaq: NXPI) announces a new Matter™-enabled development platform that simplifies and accelerates the development of Matter devices for smart homes and smart buildings. With the new Matter development platform, designers can easily leverage NXP’s broad portfolio of processing, connectivity and security solutions to develop a wide range of IoT devices, including battery-powered devices such as sensing and actuation, and edge routers with Thread Sophisticated gateway to functions and Matter controller functions.
With the recent introduction of the Matter certification program and the approval of the Matter standard, the smart home is on the cusp of rapid development. The Matter standard was developed by the Connectivity Standards Consortium (CSA), a consortium of semiconductor industry leaders including NXP. The introduction of this standard heralds a new era of interoperability in the IoT space, with fewer restrictions on devices communicating with each other. This will bring more flexibility to end users of smart homes and smart buildings, allowing them to choose among different brands of smart homes and control them through multiple platforms and ecosystems without compatibility concerns.
Bill Curtis, analyst for residential IoT and edge processing at Moor Insights & Strategy, said: "With Matter's support, smart home products from major consumer electronics manufacturers are enabling multi-device, multi-vendor and multi-ecosystem interaction for the first time. Operability. Matter not only removes barriers to deploying IoT at scale, but also opens up new opportunities for product innovation. NXP’s secure Matter-enabled development platform allows product teams to rapidly develop value-added features without having to differentiate in other waste time on platform software that leverages advantages.”
Rafael Sotomayor, executive vice president and general manager of the Connectivity and Security and Edge Processing Group at NXP Semiconductors, said: “We want the smart home to more accurately predict our daily lives and needs and enable an automated world. The interoperability provided by Matter is the key to realizing this vision. Matter-enabled platforms seamlessly bring together the various foundational technologies developers need to simplify and accelerate the development of various Matter devices, further enabling a truly smart smart home."
Development platforms that support Matter
NXP's Matter-enabled development platform is now available to customers. The platform utilizes a variety of commercially available evaluation boards and tools, and provides downloadable software, quick start guides, application notes, schematics, training videos, and forums to support wireless connectivity-related products to help simplify, accelerate and reduce the risk of IoT development . This series of platforms is currently awaiting confirmation of Matter certification from the Connectivity Standards Alliance. NXP also partners with Apple, Amazon, Google and SmartThings, and participates in Matter Early Access programs where appropriate, enabling NXP customers' products to work with these and other ecosystems.
The development platform is equipped with a dedicated EdgeLock® security chip and secure authentication, providing a complete one-stop Matter security solution, including Matter device certificate and credential configuration.
Safety is at the heart of Matter
Equipped with a dedicated EdgeLock® SE05x security chip and EdgeLock A5000 security authentication, the NXP development platform provides a complete one-stop Matter security solution. These plug-and-trust security components connect to any processor using a standard I2C interface and are responsible for providing Matter authentication keys and certificates to the device, as well as performing hardware acceleration of the Matter authentication protocol. With the above advantages, OEMs can simplify the Matter security specification compliance process and accelerate the corresponding manufacturing process, especially in the generation and configuration of certified commissioning certificates, and the security logistics related to the Matter ecosystem. In addition to this, OEMs can further use NXP's EdgeLock security chip and secure authentication (both Common Criteria EAL6+ certified) to protect user data, user privacy and device integrity, and ensure secure connectivity to multiple cloud services (including software update servers).
Platform Portfolio Continues to Expand
NXP continues to drive the expansion and integration of product capabilities to enable innovation in the smart home and building market. The IW612 is the industry's first secure tri-band radio supporting Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3 and 802.15.4 protocols, enabling Matter innovation on a wide range of MCUs and MPUs. In addition, NXP will introduce new fully integrated multi-protocol tri-band radio MCUs optimized for Matter including Thread, Zigbee and Bluetooth Low Energy starting in early 2023.
